Having spent a majority of his 26 years imprisonment on Robben Island;
Nelson Mandela declared Robben Island a national monument. On December
1, 1997, Robben Island was declared a World Heritage Site and has become
a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit. It can truly be said that
South Africa's democracy was born and formed on Robben Island as many
of its present day leaders spent some time imprisoned on this Island.
